Happy New Year!  We hope all of our members and supporters had a wonderful holiday season.  Those of you who were able to join us at our "Festival of Holidays" would agree that it was a fun and delicious way to start off the season.  If you missed it, you can read the recap -- and hope you can join us next year. 

We've updated our Accomplishments page to review some of our important and meaningful activities of 2009.  We look forward to another excellent year.

Do you know a child who has a brother or sister with a developmental disability?  Our popular Sibshops celebrate the contributions made by siblings.  New 2010 dates just announced.

Updated December 14:  Our Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2009 (7/1/08-6/30/09) has been posted to our website. 

It's not too late to join us for the "Festival of Holidays" on December 6.  Download the brochure for all the details.

Our November 4 Town Hall Meeting was a huge success!  Over 300 people turned out to support people with developmental disabilities and the agencies that support them.  And the Board of Public Works responded by not making additional cuts.  Please thank Governor O'Malley for compassionately responding to the pleas of thousands of people across the state.  By working together we can accomplish great things!

The Arc is hosting a Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday, November 4 to discuss the Waiting List crises and Underfunding of Community Programs.  We anticipate a large turnout.  A recap will be posted on our website and in our member newsletter, The Link.  

Our helpful One-Page Brochures have been updated and revised. 

Begin your holidays with us!  Join us at our new event, "A Festival of Holidays" on December 6.  The afternoon will be filled with delicious food & drink, music, photography and centerpiece contests, and more!  Download the brochure here

A big congratulations to our Executive Director, Joanna Pierson, for celebrating 30 years at The Arc!   We are also very proud of her recent election as President of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Way to go, Joanna!

Everyone is getting ready to tee off for our Captain's Choice Golf Scramble on September 14. There is still room for more players and sponsors. Nothing like spending a beautiful September morning on the golf course, while raising money for The Arc at the same time. Please join us!  Contact Karla at 301-663-0909 for more information.

Another upcoming event is a Yard Sale on Saturday, September 12.  The Arc is joining forces with the other United Way agencies at the PNC bank on Thomas Johnson Drive.  Donations are needed!  This looks like it will be a fun way to raise money for The Arc and find a few bargains, too. 

Welcome to our Board of Directors for Fiscal Year 2010.  We look forward to a successful year.

Finally, please remember The Arc of Frederick County in your workplace giving. We are a partner agency of the United Way of Frederick County and you can designate us on your employer’s United Way campaign form. Thanks to everyone who attended The Arc’s 50th Anniversary Expo on October 26. It was an amazing afternoon! A recap of the day’s activities and lots of pictures have just been posted to our website.

Also added to our website is Hope’s Ingredients, an interactive training tool to support transitioning students and other self-advocates with identifying and following their passions for independent living and meaningful careers. An article about Hope’s Ingredients was recently printed in the nationally recognized Exceptional Parent magazine.

Happy 50th Anniversary to The Arc of Frederick County! In October 1958, local parents of children with developmental disabilities formed an organization because community programs for children with disabilities did not exist. The Arc continues be a leader in advocacy efforts and the creation of new services for individuals and families today.

To help us celebrate this amazing milestone, please join us at the 50th Anniversary Expo on Sunday, October 26 at the Lynfield Event Complex in Frederick. Download a flyer with all the details. 

In addition, the “Real World” Playhouse Raffle drawing will be held at the end of the Expo – but you do not need to be present to win. Tickets are only $5.00 each.

The Arc is proud to have been selected the beneficiary for this year's Charity Art Auction, hosted by the Bar Association of Frederick County. We hope to see you there on March 14.

Calling all parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, child care providers, and anyone who wants to support The Arc! In celebration of our 50th Anniversary, and to raise funds for the "Real World" experience, we are selling tickets to a custom-designed children's playhouse. Approximate value of the playhouse is $3,200. Raffle tickets are only $5.00!

Are you a brother or sister of a kid with a developmental disability, or do you know someone who is? The Arc's popular SibShop events give kids a chance to talk about what it's like having a sibling with a developmental disability ... and have lots of fun, too!

Planning for emergencies is important for everyone, and it presents different challenges for people with disabilities. Our Emergency Preparedness page can help people with disabilities and their families think about ways they can prepare for disasters before they happen. We hope our "Grab and Go Emergency Book" is especially helpful.

Here's a fun, short-term volunteer opportunity. In 2008, The Arc of Frederick County will be celebrating 50 years of service to the Frederick community, with a variety of events from January - December of 2008. If you would like to be part of planning these events, the first meeting will be at The Arc's office on Thursday, August 9th. More information is on our Volunteer page. We'd love to see you there!

Speaking of loving to see you there -- please join us for our Captain's Choice Golf Tournament on September 24. The registration form gives all the details. This is a wonderful fundraiser for The Arc, and the golfers always have a fabulous time.

Our very popular Parents' Day Out is looking for donations of the following:

  • Coloring books
  • Disposable baby changing pads
  • DVD's -- new, for kids
  • Pull-Ups for kids 70 lbs
  • A pump for inflatable balls

Move volunteer opportunities have been added to our site.

Skills Educators and Respite Care Providers now have a newsletter just for them. You can download a copy from our Print Resources page.

We've made some address changes changes on the Attorney List, which is on our Futures Planning page.

The holidays are right around the corner. As you make your list and check it twice, consider shopping online to help support The Arc. Or make an online donation to The Arc and will will send a personalized letter to the recipient to notify them of your generous gift.

Congratulations to Joanna Pierson, The Arc of Frederick County's Executive Director, for receiving an award from the Frederick County Commission on Disabilities. Well deserved!

Our popular Parents' Day Out program is in need of various items. If you can donate any of these, please contact Beate Frankel at 301-663-0909.

  • “Dress Up" items for girls (feather boas, jewelry, hats, etc.)

  • Small child's play table and chairs
  • Vacuum Cleaner

In addition, The Arc would love the donation of a standard garden hose to use in watering our outdoor plants. Please call if you can help with this.

Updated September 14 -- Two new events have been added to our site. Hope to see you there!

The Arc is delighted to announce that our Endowment Fund has reached the $1 million goal. Our Endowment Fund is designed to assist families in planning for the future. We thank our many contributors for making this goal a reality.

It's not too late to sign up for our Captain's Choice Scramble. Join in the fun, enjoy a round of golf, lots of prizes, and a delicious luncheon while supporting The Arc.

We have added a few more web links to our site. There is a lot of great information about specific disabilities, resources for families, education, government programs, and more.

Updated May 23 -- All current members are invited to attend our annual Membership Meeting on Thursday, June 1 at 5:15 pm.

We're growing! A full-time Support Coordinator position has been added to our Employment page.

Congratulations to Sarah Stup, a young lady served by The Arc of Frederick County, for her first children's book, Do-Si-Do with Autism, now in print. This delightful book can be purchased from her website, SarahStup.com. Way to go, Sarah!

We have added a Letter of Intent template on our Futures Planning page. This template can be completed on your computer and customized to meet your needs.

They say the neon lights are bright at The Arc's annual Trivia Playoff. Information and the registration form are now online. Everyone is welcome to attend!

We have updated our online Timeline, which shows the exciting history of The Arc of Frederick County.

This month's Parents' Day Out has been rescheduled to February 18.

Updated January 11 - New Year, New Job? See the openings that have been added to our Employment Opportunities page.

The new year brings some exciting changes for part of The Arc. On January 1, our Service Coordination Division became its own agency, Service Coordination, Inc. Nothing has changed to the Support Services we provide in Frederick County. We look forward to continuing our long tradition of providing advocacy, resources, and connections to individuals with developmental disabilities in Frederick County.

The January/February edition of The Link has been added to our site. The newsletter is sent to everyone who is a member of The Arc.
