 Volunteer & Employment

 Current Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Show Choir Competition Volunteers - We will need a lot of volunteers to make our inaugural show choir competition a success! It will be held on April 28th at 7:00 PM at International Community Church. We will have a variety of tasks including: ushering, managing the voting stations, taking tickets, set-up/clean-up, and other duties as needed.  Contact Shauna if you’re interested.
  • Administrative Volunteer -- We are looking for a volunteer to compile a monthly listing of free and inexpensive activities in Frederick County.  This person would call around to local businesses that offer free or inexpensive classes (such as Home Depot, Michael's, etc.) and research other local events that skills educators and people we support could attend together.  You could do this from your home or come into The Arc's office, and the schedule is up to you, as long as we have the compiled events on a regular basis.  Contact Shauna for more details about this unique opportunity.
  • Tutors for Middle and High School Students -- Would you like to help a young person with reading and comprehension?  The volunteers would tutor in the students' homes.  Contact Shauna for details.
  • Trivia Committee Members -- We’re looking for new members for our Trivia Committee as we are planning our 27th Annual Trivia Playoff on March 23, 2012.  This committee works on various aspects of the event in order to make it a continued success. No need to be good at Trivia to be on the committee! Committee meets once a month until the event is over.  Next meeting: February 22, 2012 at 11:30 AM.  Contact Shauna if interested.
  • Driver's Ed Assistant --  An individual we serve is looking for a volunteer to drive her from her Walkersville home to a driving school in Frederick and back, and assist her during the class.  The class runs for 2 consecutive weeks, Monday-Friday.  Contact Shauna at 301-663-0909 for additional details.
  • Drivers wanted! Many of the individuals we support need a ride to get to and from medical appointments, self advocacy meetings, and adult education classes.  If you are able to help out with transportation, please contact Shauna Clay at 301-663-0909 ext.40 or email her at SClay@arcfc.org for a volunteer application.  Good driving record required.
  • We need volunteers to help at our front desk!  Although we have started using voice mail, we are looking for volunteers to assist us at our front desk to greet visitors and transfer incoming phone calls.  We can always use additional volunteers for on-call backup coverage (great for someone with other commitments who is only available to fill in).  No experience is necessary, but the ability to maintain confidentiality is a must.  Professional personal presentation, please.  Please contact Shauna Clay at 301-663-0909 ext.40 or email her at SClay@arcfc.org for a volunteer application and for more information.
  • Volunteers for our monthly Parents' Day Out Program -- One Saturday per month, August through June we provide 4 hours of respite time for parents and children. This is a great opportunity for teens, college students, and adults to help children with disabilities while having a lot of fun. Training is provided. Please contact Bridget at 301-663-0909 ext. 21 for information about volunteering at Parents' Day Out.
  • Do you enjoy sharing your time and activities?  You will meet someone who shares your interests and would enjoy going with you to the movies, concerts, shopping, the library or sight seeing. You may simply relax with a picnic and a visit to a local park.  Friendships are welcome!
  • Volunteer to share your expertise.    Volunteer mentors are always appreciated! Could you help someone learn about your favorite hobby or skill? Any life skill that you would like to share with another could be helpful.  You do not need to be a professional in the area, just if you have a working knowledge.  Some examples are:
      - Cooking skills
      - Computer skills
      - Photography
      - Art
      - Budgeting

For more information and a volunteer application, contact Shauna at The Arc: 301-663-0909 ext.40, or download our application, and send it to:
