In the "Real World" we help people with disabilities gain the confidence and learn the skills and determine their needs for support for successfully leaving their parents' home for their own home or apartment. We do this by one weekend a month for a person having them stay in an extended stay hotel with support staff who help them learn to cook, do laundry, shop, take public transportation to work, and other skills so that they and their parents can become confident over time that it is okay for them to move out of their parents' home (like any other adult). This also gives them and us a chance to see what support they will continue to need to live independently. It is hard for all of us to let our adult children go; it is even harder for parents when their son or daughter has a disability. This transition provides valuable time and support to allow for this to happen well.
The Arc of Frederick County is proud to announce our "Real World" program partnership with Residence Inn by Marriott of Frederick, Maryland. Residence Inn has donated the cost of their suites for Real World participants and their staff. The staff at Residence Inn are very pleased to be supporting individuals with developmental disabilities meet their goals of independent living.
