March is National Mental Retardation Awareness Month

Since 1979, The Arc of the United States has sponsored National Mental Retardation Awareness Month in March. During this month, we at The Arc will be focusing our efforts on increasing public awareness of mental retardation and related developmental disabilities. Through public service announcements, media coverage, and public speaking, throughout the year and especially this month, it is our goal to enhance the community's understanding of the issues affecting people with mental retardation.

One particularly meaningful part of Mental Retardation Awareness Month is Sabbath/Sunday weekend, March 13-14. Sabbath/Sunday Weekend offers a special opportunity for churches, synagogues, and other religious organizations to recognize the needs and abilities of people with mental retardation and their families.

Welcome these children and adults in your life. Encourage their participation in activities of your religious community, from worship services to study groups to recreational activities. "Beatitudes for Friends and Family" is a poignant selection we are pleased to include on our site.

Mental retardation is a condition which affects more than 7 million Americans and their families. The Arc believes that individuals should work, live, play, and worship alongside people with and without disabilities. When given opportunities, experiences, and appropriate supports, people with mental retardation become vital and vibrant members of our community.

Please join us in our efforts by taking the time this month to learn more about mental retardation and other developmental disabilities.
